German democracy confronted one of its darkest moments after Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a vote of confidence in parliament in December 2024, leading to early elections on February 23rd. This unstable political situation created the perfect conditions for extremism and populism to threaten press freedom with misinformation and restrictions, but also a unique opportunity for Reporters Without Borders Germany to send voters a crucial reminder to defend it.
